I am a multicultural artist that attempts to capture the magical realism that I see and experience in the world around me. I come from a Californio family with a long tradition of ranching and an out doors style of living. With a sense of nostalgia of my own heritage, I find myself drawn toward Latin America and Latino culture. I highlight the beauty of my subjects without attempting to edit out and manipulate them to fit into a preconceived idea of how things should be. I do this by using people that I know and have met, along with places where I have been. By doing so, I keep my work honest and free of stereotypical imagery that media and society transmits into our minds. For example, you will never see a diverse mountain city depicted as an Amazonian jungle scene in any of my pieces. I document my world consciously dissect stereotypes to show a side of reality that people either overlook or choose not to see. For example, whenever someone mentions Colombia, the first thing that people think of has to do with drug use. In my experience of living there, I found that the most common thing in Colombia was the kindness of the people.  I illustrate my, often, optimistic attitudes toward life to transform society's false narrative in hopes of moving toward a more enlightened interpretation the world.  

 

I go through many steps in my creative process. First I seek out subjects that are intriguing to me. Then, I contemplate about those subjects seeking elements of luster, thrust of life, symbolic meaning, and historic importance. Once I have figured why I am intrigued, I then move on to doing more research on the subject. When working from life, I make some sketches to work out the composition and the lighting. When I use a reference,  I try to do as much research as I can on the subject to preserve its authenticity and to decide what would be the best way to depict the subject stylistically. I decide what would be the best medium and color palette to express what I want to say about the subject. I tend to work mostly in oil and acrylic. My palette varies from using one color with the use of white and black, to extremely expansive, using over 20 colors.

 

I have always been interested in creating representational art that depicts the things in life that inspire me the most. I started doing mostly landscape paintings and have recently been focusing on the human subject. I am inspired by the work of Velazquez, Goya, Kahlo, Dali, Valadez, and Yepes.  The emotion that they project from their work is what inspired me to become an artist and is the effect I long to get from my own work as well. Currently I have been working on a mural that fuses all of my passions. It is a multicultural piece that uses landscape and the human form to bridge gaps over time, struggle, and progress. The piece represents the Latino, Polynesian, and African American population. In my next project, I plan to do a series of portraits and landscapes throughout Latin America, starting in Colombia and possibly branching out to other countries. I am constantly going to new places to find new inspiration.

 

Soy una artista multicultural que intenta capturar el realismo mágico que veo y experiencia en el mundo que me rodea. Yo vengo de una familia californiana con una larga tradición de la ganadería y un estilo fuera puertas de la vida. Con un sentimiento de nostalgia de mi propia herencia, me siento atraído hacia América Latina y la cultura latina. Destaco la belleza de mis temas sin tratar de editar y manipular para que se ajusten a una idea preconcebida de cómo deberían ser las cosas. Hago esto mediante el uso de las personas que conozco y he conocido, junto con lugares en los que he estado. De esta manera, mantengo mi trabajo honesto y libre de las imágenes estereotipadas que los medios y la sociedad transmite en nuestras mentes. Por ejemplo, usted nunca verá una gran ciudad de la montaña se muestra como una escena de la selva amazónica en cualquiera de mis piezas. Yo documento mi mundo diseccionar conscientemente estereotipos para mostrar un lado de la realidad que la gente o pasan por alto o eligen no ver. Por ejemplo, cada vez que alguien menciona a Colombia, lo primero que la gente piensa que tiene que ver con el consumo de drogas. En mi experiencia de vivir allí, me pareció que lo más común en Colombia fue la amabilidad de la gente. Ilustro mi, a menudo, las actitudes optimistas ante la vida para transformar falsa narrativa de la sociedad con la esperanza de avanzar hacia una interpretación más ilustrado del mundo.

 

Voy a través de muchos pasos en mi proceso creativo. En primer lugar me busco temas que son interesantes para mí. Entonces, contemplo sobre aquellos temas que buscan elementos de brillo, el empuje de la vida, un significado simbólico, y la importancia histórica. Una vez que he descubierto por qué estoy intrigado, yo luego pasar a hacer más investigaciones sobre el tema. Cuando se trabaja a partir de la vida, hago algunos bocetos para elaborar la composición y la iluminación. Cuando uso una referencia, trato de hacer tanta investigación como puedo sobre el tema de preservar su autenticidad y decidir cuál sería la mejor manera de describir el tema estilísticamente. Yo decido lo que sería el mejor medio y la paleta de colores para expresar lo que quiero decir sobre el tema. Tiendo a trabajar principalmente en óleo y acrílico. Mi paleta varía de usar un color con el uso del blanco y negro, a extremadamente expansiva, con más de 20 colores.

 

Siempre he estado interesado en la creación de arte figurativo que representa las cosas en la vida que me inspiran más. Empecé a hacer su mayoría pinturas de paisajes y recientemente se han centrado en el sujeto humano. Me siento inspirado por la obra de Velázquez, Goya, Kahlo, Dalí, Valadez y Yepes. La emoción que se proyectan de su trabajo es lo que me inspiró a convertirse en un artista y es el efecto que anhelo para ir de mi propio trabajo también. Actualmente he estado trabajando en un mural que fusiona todas mis pasiones. Es una pieza multicultural que utiliza el paisaje y la forma humana de superar las diferencias a través del tiempo, la lucha y el progreso. La pieza representa la población de América latina, Polinesia, y africana. En mi próximo proyecto, tengo la intención de hacer una serie de retratos y paisajes en toda América Latina, a partir de Colombia y posiblemente ramificación a otros países. Estoy constantemente yendo a nuevos lugares para encontrar una nueva inspiración.
